September 17, 2020

We have been highlighting many famous people of Hispanic heritage in class, including writers, singers, activists, and artists. We have spent additional time on one person in particular - Cesar Chavez. We watched videos, read books, and the children have access to books that were assigned through Epic. Using the graphic organizer provided on the side of this page, students will take notes. Then they will write a biography on Cesar Chavez, using the notes. This will be due by Wednesday September 23, 2020. It can be emailed to me at [email protected] Thank you for your support. You can send it earlier. I just want to give enough time.

On the side of this page, there is a rubric for this report. I will go over it with the students. The sources they will use will include information gleaned from the Flocabulary video, Brain Pop video, and the two short picture books assigned in Epic. They can include more if they want. The rubric says 5, but these 4 are enough.

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

September 15 - October 15

Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana!

Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month to pay tribute to the contributions of the Hispanic and Latino American culture to our country.

We observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by recognizing the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens and residents whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Here at Colin Powell Elementary, we celebrate and pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our city, our nation and our society.

The students in Room 321 and 319 will be crafting narratives in which they will choose a famous person of Hispanic heritage, past or present, with whom they would love to spend a day. In their essay, they will weave biographical facts with their own creative ideas. Graphic organizers and samples will be available for the students to plan their writing.
