 Hello my name is Ms. Jennifer Lyons.  I have been teaching in Union City since 2002.  I taught in Sara M. Gilmore School from 2002 to 2012.  I have been teaching in Colin Powell Elementary School since September 2012.  I have a B.A. in History and a M.A. in Urban Education with a concentration in English as a Second Language.  I look forward to working with my students on a daily basis to help them develop a love for learning.

Week 12: ELA / Social Studies

Week 12: ELA/Social Studies 

   This week the students will finish reading the novel, The Courage of Sarah Noble. On December 6, 2022 there will be a Whole Book Comprehension/Vocabulary Test on The Courage of Sarah Noble. The remainder of next week the students will work on a Benchmark PCR. Students will receive a Study Guide in their Take Home Folder. Please review with your child the novel vocabulary and study guide. The vocabulary and study guide are posted on Schoology as well.

   In addition, students will complete the Social Studies Our Environment chapter on SAVVAS.  Students received an Our Environment Study Guide. The Our Environment Test will be on Friday, December 2, 2022. Please have your child review the study guide each night. As well as review the My World eText lessons on SAVVAS. If your child is absent during the school week please have your child work on assignments posted on Schoology, Flocabulary, BrainPOPJr, and SAVVAS. Thank you.

Week 11: ELA/Social Studies

This short week the students will continue to read the novel, The Courage of Sarah Noble.  Students will focus on chapters 5-7 in the novel. Students received a chapters 5-7 vocabulary words sheet to study throughout the week. The vocabulary words are posted as a slideshow for each chapter on Schoology as well.  Homework will include rereading the chapter read in class and work on an ongoing vocabulary sheet found in his/her Take Home Folder each day. Students will turn in the vocabulary sheet on Wednesday. In addition, for Social Studies students will be going over Thanksgiving and discussing things he/she is thankful for in their lives.

Week 10: ELA/Social Studies

This week students will receive the novel, The Courage of Sarah Noble. Students will be reading and completing activities for this novel for the next 4 weeks in class. After 4 weeks students will return to the SAVVAS My View stories with one story a week with weekly words of the week.

This week in English Language Arts the students will focus on chapters 1-4 in the novel. Students received a chapters 1-4 vocabulary words sheet to study throughout the week. The vocabulary words are posted as a slideshow for each chapter on Schoology as well.  Homework will include rereading the chapter read in class and work on an ongoing vocabulary sheet found in his/her Take Home Folder each day. Students will turn in the vocabulary sheet on Monday, November 21, 2022. In addition, for Social Studies please continue to review Our Environment, Ch.1 Lessons 1-4 in My World.

This week the students will be finishing the novel Clementine and working on their Ongoing Clementine Writing Benchmark in class. Students received a Chapters 9-10 vocabulary words sheet to study throughout the week. The vocabulary words are posted as a slideshow for each chapter on Schoology as well. Students will have a Chapters 9-10 Vocabulary assignment on Thursday.  In addition, students received a Clementine Whole Book Study Guide. Students will have a Clementine Whole Book Test on Friday.

Homework will include rereading the chapter read in class that day and work on an ongoing vocabulary sheet found in his/her Take Home Folder each day. Students will turn in the vocabulary sheet on Wednesday. In addition, students will study the Clementine Whole Book study guide for the Test on Friday.

This week the students will focus on Clementine, Chapters 5-9. Students received a Chapters 5-8 vocabulary words sheet to study throughout the week. The vocabulary words are posted as a slideshow for each chapter on Schoology as well (Classlink > Schoology > Courses> Reading > Scroll down to Vocabulary Slideshows). Students will have a Chapters 5-8 Vocabulary assignment on Friday.  

Homework will include rereading the chapter read in class that day and work on an ongoing vocabulary sheet found in his/her Take Home Folder each day. Students will turn in the vocabulary sheet on Friday. In addition, students will study the Continents, Oceans, and Directions study sheet found in the Green Take Home Folder. The Continents, Oceans, and Directions Test is Friday.

Week 6: Clementine Novel Begins

Students will receive the novel, Clementine on Monday, October 17, 2022. Students will be reading and completing activities for this novel for the next 4 weeks in class. This week the students will focus on Clementine, Chapters 1-4. Students will receive a Chapters 1-4 vocabulary words sheet to study throughout the week. The vocabulary words are posted as a slideshow for each chapter on Schoology as well. ELA Unit 1, Week 5 Words of the Week

October 11-14, 2022 ELA/Social Studies

This week the students will have a Unit 1, Week 5 Words of the Week sheet in the green Take Home Folder. Assessments will be held on Monday, October 17, 2022 rather than Friday this week only. Please have your child study the vocabulary and spelling words throughout the week. A Spelling Activity Sheet has been provided to practice spelling words throughout the week. The Spelling Activity Sheet is due Friday. The Words of the Week will be posted on Schoology in the Reading and Writing Course as well. Additional vocabulary study aid links will be provided on Schoology with links to Quizlet and Gimkit in the current Reading Course. You may access these resources using the following steps:

Week of Respect October 3-7, 2022

Week of Respect will be celebrated from October 3-7, 2022 Students will be participating in Week of Respect activities throughout the week using the Weird Series books and activities.  In addition, students may participate in the following Spirit Day events:
